Understanding diabetes is the key to good control.

Knowing how to control diabetes is the key to be healthy.

It is important to know the signs and symptoms. so you can see your doctor about your treatment.

When you are first diagnosed it can come as a bit of a shock. However when the shock wears off you need to adjust to living with your diabetes.

There are 3 types of diabetes.

Type 1: When the body fails to produce any insulin. If you have Type 1 diabetes, you will almost certainly be put on insulin.

Type 2: When the cells in the body are unable to make use of the insulin produced. If you have Type 2 diabetes you will be told to modify your diet and you may be put on medication.

Gestational: This is when pregnant women have high levels of blood sugar when they didn't have diabetes before. They will be monitored throughout and once the baby's born the diabetes disappears.

Whatever type of diabetes that you have, it means that you have to make major changes in your lifestyle.

It is important to keep your diabetes under control in order to give yourself the best chance of avoiding diabetic neuropathy and diabetic retinopathy

If you smoke, it is strongly recommended that you stop. You will also need to cut down on your alcohol intake. If you use any recreational drugs it is also strongly advised that you stop.

You will also need to modify your diet. If you tend to eat a lot of junk food and sugar, you will need to cut down and find healthy alternatives.

You will certainly need to up your fruit and veg intake. Aim to eat at least 5 portions a day and no; strawberry milkshake, blueberry muffins and carrot cake do not count. You will also need to exercise. Walk more instead of driving or taking the bus.

My father once went through a phase of having wheels for feet, He would drive me to Brownies which was just around the corner from our house.

So living with diabetes can be done well, I understand that it is a major lifestyle change, but when you feel better in yourself it is all worth it.
